Artistic Midwifery

Dark Glass Theatre has a big mandate.

In fact, there are so many stories that build bridges, celebrate diversity, and foster empathy that one tiny company cannot possibly tell them all by ourselves. And in a world that seems increasingly divided and divisive, those stories are needed more than ever. We started to ask ourselves: How do we make the most of what we have? How do we create space for more artists, more diversity, more stories?

The answer is Artistic Midwifery.

Any parent who has had the help of a midwife knows how valuable they are in an intense time. The midwife guides the new life into the world, while caring for the individual responsible for that life. We want to do that with theatre.

Maybe it’s a young company looking for some guidance in producing their first show. Or a budding playwright who needs a dramaturge. Or a new director seeking a mentor. Assistance could be anything from a single consultation to an ongoing program of coaching.

Whatever the need, our goal is to accompany these artists on the journey to bringing their artistic babies to life.

Do you have a play project or proposal that fits our mandate? Would you benefit from artistic midwifery? If yes, we welcome you to apply for some midwifery assistance. Once accepted, we work with you to discover the specific needs and determine the best plan and schedule. And it’s all free for accepted applicants.

We have limited perspective. Always. Sometimes we need someone or something to help us see things in a new way.

Artistic director, Angela Konrad.

With decades of experience as an award-winning director and educator, Angela Konrad has learned a thing or two about creating and producing theatre, telling stories, working with teams, and speaking in public. She has been a theatre administrator, publicist, designer, fundraiser, dramaturg, producer, and director. She has taught individuals and groups, run workshops, and facilitated storytelling events. In every one of these positions, her goal has been to see people flourish. Nothing makes her happier than helping bring new ideas to life and walking alongside others to make it happen, with as little fear and as much joy as possible.
